Sailing away from the bustling crowds of Mumbai, the ferry glides towards the serene coastal town of Alibag. The city's noise fades, replaced by the gentle rhythms of the sea. The journey to The Mango House begins with a sunlit walk along the pier, followed by a peaceful drive down a quiet dirt road, shaded by a canopy of lush green trees. As you step through the gates, the house reveals itself gradually, blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The mango trees, the site’s long-standing residents, dictated the house’s form. In a thoughtful response to their intricate network of roots, the design preserves their presence, making them active participants in the architecture.

Studio PKA designed an installation, The Hut, made of earthy materials like brick, terracotta tiles and old timber. The objective was to appraise the citizens of Mumbai , of the construction methods using environment friendly materials. Additionally, we designed a workshop – ‘Bonding over Brick’ – for people to come together and build the rest of the installation over two days with us.
