Perched on the 29th floor in central Mumbai, this apartment overlooks Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the cityscape. Seeking a sanctuary away from the urban hustle, the family envisioned a space conducive to raising children and fostering togetherness. Studio PKA responded by creating pockets of community and solitude within the spatial layout.

Overlooking the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, in a posh high-rise, is a three-bedroom apartment for a family of three generations—a couple, their 10-year-old son and their parents. Leaving behind pretence of any kind, it welcomes you inside where simplicity blends harmoniously with warmth, and weaves an India-proud narrative through design.

Mumbai’s skyline constantly mutates; it’s a city that churns out towering buildings at an alarming rate, each clamouring for attention. It’s easy to get lost in this cacophony of lofty structures, yet drowning out the noise is some of the city’s most characterful architecture of Art Deco buildings, quietly standing steadfast within this world. So, when Studio PKA was called upon to reimagine the empty shell into a family apartment on the third floor of one of these beauties, they took that architectural inheritance seriously.

The Mango House was built in the seaside village of Alibaug, just off the coast of Mumbai in 2015. Keen to utilise the plot to its full potential, PK conceived of an interactive design lab that would serve as a space to initiate a dialogue and creativity between the local craftspeople and the designers and students who would be invited there.

Not just a structure of brick and stone, this house is an art for artists to behold. And while that happens, it also becomes a harbour of repose for the homeowners, underlaced with imprints of splendour and sentient art. While individual efforts of design may bring a distinguished sense of completeness to a space, but this abode stands exemplary of the collaborative magic that Studio PKA and DeMuro Das have brought alive in a voluminous penthouse that keenly overlooks a sweeping 142-acres of Golf & Country Club in Gurugram.

Stirworld: The Loft | Redefined

Located on the second floor of a century-old Victorian building in Mumbai, India, is the refurbished, renovated, recreated and reimagined office space - The Loft | Redefined. Indian architect Puran Kumar of Studio PKA took it upon himself to sustainably redesign his own studio space to fit into its new home. While redesigning the architectural office, Studio PKA consciously considered the location, in this case in heart of the city’s art district, to create a streamlined yet uniquely comfortable studio space..

Happily ever after and how this was accomplished - With a gross built area of 2,100 sq. ft., the studio was to have natural light and be accessible and responsive to client requirements. The studio is surrounded by the classic elements of South Bombay – the Victoria Terminus to the east, galleries and museums to the south and sprawling maidans to the west, the site is located within an urban cultural identity.
